Susan Lanzano
Botanical Art in Watercolor and Chinese Ink
October 18 – November 22, 2025
Artist Statement
I love to use watercolors to capture the movement and spirit of botanical life. Every painting becomes, in a way, a record of my love affair with a little piece of the natural world at a specific moment in time. I feel a profound connection with my subjects as I work with them, recording each contour on paper, and it is my goal to bring others to that same intimate relationship with nature.
I work in a range of styles—from spontaneous Asian brush painting to highly realistic and detailed classical botanical painting. I also like to play in the middle, combining elements of both traditions and finding new ground. The creative
moment for me often begins with a walk in the garden, when my attention is captured by the beauty of a particular branch, the curve of a leaf or the delicacy of a petal. I am happiest when I can spend a few months on a particular subject, seeing it from all angles, doing multiple studies and paintings, and experiencing what is for me a form of extended meditation.
About the Artist
Susan began her studies of Chinese brush painting in 2000 with Leslie Tseng-tseng Yu and botanical art in 2002 with
Corrine Lapin-Cohen. Her other teachers have included Frederick Franck, Diana Kan, Irene Korsky, Carmen Lund, Bao
Chen Liu and Frank Liao as well as colleagues at the Asian Brush Artists Guild, an organization of which she is currently
president.
Susan began exhibiting in 2002 and since then has received critical acclaim for her “unique interpretation of Oriental
brush and Western botanical painting” resulting in “exquisitely delicate and detailed renderings that capture the
energy, movement and spirit of living plants.”
In addition to original paintings, Susan offers her work as limited edition, archival giclée prints, notecards, and botanical calendars, which have a devoted following throughout the U.S.
Susan and her husband live in Cortlandt Manor, New York, where she welcomes visits to her studio.
