Storytime Guidelines

We carefully plan storytimes for you and your child. These tips make storytime go more smoothly:

  • Respect the age guidelines listed for each program.
  • Come on time. Parking is often a problem here; coming 10 minutes early will enable you to be relaxed and ready. If you’re a few minutes late, wait by the Program Room door until the story or song is done and then QUIETLY slip in. If you’re more than fifteen minutes late, please do something else in the library: read a book, play with toys, use the computer together— and try again next time!
  • Show your child how to “go to storytime.” Sing along. Don’t look at phones or books, or chat extensively, so your child can learn to be an active and attentive participant.
  • Don’t sit on the windowsills. It’s difficult to keep the children off them if adults are sitting there, and they’re slippery and hard! If an adult needs a chair, feel free to bring one in.
  • Don’t bring books or toys in with you. They distract children and make it harder for them to participate in the program.
  • Eating and drinking are not allowed. When bottles and spill-proof cups are visible, every child in the room will want some. If your child needs a snack, please eat in the lobby or the courtyard before or after the program.
  • Fussing, crying, running around or otherwise not participating may be signs that it is time to leave. Sometimes children change their minds about being at storytime or simply feel that they have had enough. Please observe and respect your child’s judgement, so that you can recognize these signs and leave quickly and quietly. Sometimes a child is able to return to the room after a little break, but going in and out repeatedly can be distracting and confusing. There will always be another storytime, another day, so we’ll look forward to seeing you next time.
  • One storytime per day. One is fun. Two is work.
