ARE YOU WATCHING DOWNTON ABBEY?

This new series, set in a Yorkshire country house in the early years of the twentieth century, has been immensely popular, and we have a great display in the library for those of you who can't get enough of that particular time and place. From DVDs of Upstairs, Downstairs to lavish picture books of imposing English houses and gardens—we've pulled together a variety of supplemental material we think you'll enjoy.

A few of the titles that are currently on display:

edwardians The Edwardians by Roy Hattersley. An examination of the period during the reign of Edward VII, that “golden sunlit afternoon,” when politics, science, literature and the arts were all turned upside down.

crimson_portrait The Crimson Portrait by Jody Shields.  A young woman mourns her fallen husband as her sprawling country estate is transformed into a military hospital for severely injured soldiers.

angels_in_gloom Angels in the Gloom by Anne Perry.  Part of a series of best selling World War I novels that evokes the passion and heroism of the war meant to end all wars.

poetry_of_the_wars Poetry of the World Wars edited by Michael Foss.  An anthology that includes both great—Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Service-- as well as lesser known poets.

100_english_gardens One Hundred English Gardens by Patrick Taylor.  Historic gardens in a wide variety of styles.

great_houses_of_britain Great Houses of Britainby Nigel Nicolson.  An insider’s guide to several grand British country houses, by an author intimately acquainted with two of them.
