JUNE 2008

FRIENDS OF THE CHAPPAQUA LIBRARY BOOK SALE

This year’s book sale is shaping up to be one of our best ever.  Many thanks to everyone who donated books, sorted books, sold books, or helped clean up the books (we had a LOT of books). We couldn’t have had a successful sale without all of your help!

CAMPAIGNS PAST AND PRESENT

Now that we know who the official candidates are for next fall’s presidential election, you might want to read up on them. Books by John McCain in the library include Faith of My Fathers and Worth the Fighting For: A Memoir.  Elizabeth Drew’s Citizen McCain mccain is also on our shelves.

On the Democratic side of things, we have David Mendell’s Obama: From Promise to Power, as well as Obama’s own Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. obama

Readers interested in Hillary Clinton, gender politics or the evolution of the presidential campaign should find Thirty Ways of Looking at Hillary (by thirty different authors) fascinating.

Look also for our display on Thomas Nast and the history of political cartooning in conjunction with the New Castle Historical Society’s exhibit The Cartoonist and the Candidate: Nast, Greeley and the Campaign of 1872.

LIBRARY RETREAT/OPEN HOUSE

On Sunday, June 22 from 10:00 to 12:30 the Library Board of Trustees will host a retreat open to all the residents of Chappaqua. Pamela Thornton, the director of the library, will report on the state of the library, and librarians in charge of different aspects of the library will talk briefly about their areas of expertise. Special guest Siobhan Reardon, Executive Director of the Westchester Library System, will talk about the library of the future. Roundtable discussions will follow, focusing on the future of the library and possible services we could offer. For the complete agenda, please see our website. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Friday, June 20 at 914-238-4779, ext. 108.
