APRIL 2008

LANGUAGES AT THE LIBRARY

The Chappaqua Library wants to help you learn another language. Learn Italian while you drive by listening to CDs in your car. Tuck a playaway into your pocket and learn Irish while you walk. Put an iSync on your iPod and learn Mandarin Chinese. Materials are available in many different formats, including books; one of our favorites is the fireflydictionary Firefly Five Language Visual Dictionary  in the reference collection.

Are you a speaker of English as a second language? Join us for informal conversation on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 beginning April 5th. This free program is for adults who would like to improve their English speaking skills and will be facilitated by a certified ESL instructor. We also have many ESL materials including some new CDs and/or DVDs from the Living Language Company with titles such as English for the Real World, Easy Pronunciation, Getting Ahead in the U.S., and English for New Americans.

BABY CLOTHES FROM THE NEW CASTLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

“Babies are born without clothes. This is a situation that most parents and caregivers find unacceptable and set about to correct.” This is from the text accompanying the current exhibition of mostly 19th century baby clothes, caps and booties from the New Castle Historical Society’s collection. All items have been donated over the years by Chappaqua residents.

READ THE BOOK/SEE THE MOVIE: THE DARK IS RISING

Grades 6-8

Sunday May 4th, noon-3 p.m.

The Library will show the film The Dark Is Rising, based on the enthralling Susan Cooper series combining fantasy, folklore and mythology. Bring your lunch (drinks and desserts will be provided) and discuss this classic struggle between good and evil. The Library will also be raffling off a 5-volume set of The Dark is Rising.

Space is limited. Call 238-4779x2 or visit www.chappaqualibrary.org to register.

 AND DON'T FORGET...
April is National Poetry Month. Listen to your favorite poets on CD or tape; choose from our collection of Billy Collins, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost, Allen Ginsberg, and more.

April Fools’ Day all month long: What do you get when you cross a librarian with a lawyer? All the information you want, but you can’t understand it.  Come see the display of library-related humor librarian Teresa Bueti has collected over the years.
